Dear governments and MPs/MLAs, thank you but cities don’t need free wi-fi anymore

Today while scanning through some publicity material of the Kerala government lying with me for a while, my eyes fell on one particular entry. Apparently, the Kerala government has set up 1,000 free wi-fi facilities at public places across the state. My thoughts immediately drifted to the Delhi government’s own tom-tommed idea of free wi-fi. A news item from just yesterday on a tech portal caught my attention and I realised the project was still on.

The article said the project would cost a whopping Rs.566 crore and the first phase would see 2000 internet hotspots in the city. In 2014 or thereabouts Aam Aadmi Party went to town promising free wi-fi to Delhi’s residents........
