Can BJP’s first-term chief ministers model themselves after Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Raman Singh?

Three BJP chief ministers with a long track record in politics – and arguably the only remaining satraps in the party – are demitting office. In many of the other states that BJP has stormed to power since 2014, the party opted for younger or low profile leaders as chief ministers and it will take some years for these leaders to attain the stature of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Raman Singh and Vasundhara Raje.

This trio has towered over the party organisation in their respective states and largely helmed the assembly election campaigns without requiring much support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It remains to be seen whether BJP in the Modi era will nurture strong regional leaders given the centralisation of the party and the personality cult around Modi.

Along with Modi himself in Gujarat, BS Yeddyurappa in Karnataka, and Manohar Parrikkar in Goa, Chouhan, Singh and Raje represented an impressive line up of powerful regional leaders that kept BJP in the reckoning even as its central leadership floundered between 2004 and........
