The implications of having two power centres in a government are coming home to roost for the Congress. But Ashok Gehlot’s decisive actions since being sworn in with deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot reveal that he in no mood to cede more space to Pilot. By shuffling bureaucrats before the incoming ministers of his cabinet could have their say on who they wish to work with, Gehlot sought to let his party know who was boss.

With a majority in the Congress legislature party, Gehlot’s faction was anyway likely to have an upper hand in the cabinet. The omission of senior leader CP Joshi raised eyebrows but didn’t come as a surprise.
