Buti's Call: No excuses Simpson the very model of a modern-day coach

West Coast Eagles’ premiership coach Adam Simpson is a class act.

In the post-match interview after Friday’s 20-point semi-final loss to Geelong at the MCG, Simpson didn’t fall for the temptation of using the absence of the suspended star forward Willie Rioli as an excuse.

He could have easily done so, as there is some validity to the argument that Rioli’s absence on the field last Friday night and the shock of his sudden loss to the team would have affected the team’s playing strength and structures and the psychological state of the Eagles’ players in their sudden death clash.

But when asked by the media on how Rioli’s absence and the possible career ending ban he may face affected the team’s performance, Simpson didn’t take the bait. He said: "They [the players] are human" and they were galvanised but hurting for their popular teammate, although he could not say it affected their performance.

In talking about the Eagles’ failure to defend their premiership title, which is always difficult and rarely achieved, Simpson lamented the inconsistency of his team this year.

“We had some inconsistencies throughout the year,” Simpson said.
