The authenticity factor: voters know PM is fair dinkum about boats

Reams of commentary have been dedicated this week to the political consequences of the passing of the medevac bill that will give doctors more say in the medical evacuations to Australia of asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru.

Yes, Labor and the crossbenchers had a win in the Parliament, where the Morrison government suffered a historic defeat. And yes, it’s given the Coalition an issue to rally around as we head towards an election.

But the impact of the events of this week go deeper than that. It’s given PM Scott Morrison an opportunity to be authentic.

And if Morrison can connect with enough drifting Liberal and National voters on border protection, he might be able to get them to listen to him on other issues. But he’s going to have to apply the lesson across the board, and that’s quite a job.
