Inner-city Australia won't be silenced on coal

The trumpeter resembled a young Brad Pitt, the banjo player had the soft beard of a hip 20-something and along with the standing double-bass player the trio projected the air of conservatorium graduates who were passionate about their music and expert on their instruments.

The tunes were jazz standards and 20th-century Americana – Basin Street Blues and a raggy and ironical take on If I Only Had a Brain from The Wizard of Oz.

The stage was a field along one of Melbourne's urban creeklands, a city farm with a weekend market, $4 coffees, artisan pastries, organic fruit and veg and, in the background, people weed dating among the rows of swiss chard and silverbeet.
