Teachers inquiry will show if Laming learnt his lesson

Teaching-bashing is a national sport in Australia, and it’s got to stop.

But putting MP Andrew Laming in charge of an inquiry into teachers is akin to putting a fox in charge of the henhouse.

Yes, Andrew Laming is the MP who took to Facebook a couple of years ago to ask: “Are teachers back at work this week, or are they ‘lesson planning’ from home? Let me know exactly.’’

Suffering limelight deficit disorder on another occasion, he lamented that teaching didn’t operate like other jobs, with “the same hours, days and weeks as the rest of the economy’’.

This from a profession where MPs turned up at Parliament for 64 days in 2017, and senators for 56!

(Yes, they should be in the electorate more than Canberra, but I’d back a teacher’s work ethic........
