Carrots haven't worked with Facebook. Time to consider the stick

Sometimes I think Facebook knows me better than I know myself.

That pair of shoes I’ve imagined will pop into my Facebook feed. That event I’m desperate to attend, but in the rush of life, had slipped my mind. The birthday of my friend, which I was sure was next week. Facebook had it right.

How does it do that? Through clever algorithms and artificial intelligence that homes in on me – and you – as customers. From our online musings and comments, it collates those purchases or events that might tick our box – and delivers them to us.

It’s that clever. And a hell of a lot more intelligent than its response to the New Zealand terrorism slayings would suggest.

I learnt this during last year’s taskforce into cyberbullying, where we spent hours discussing how Facebook........
