Don’t get too excited about Hochul indefinitely postponing NYC congestion pricing (opinion)
I don’t want to be a downer.
But we’re not be out of the woods yet when it comes to congestion pricing.
In a stunning demonstration of actual political smarts, Gov. Kathy Hochul has decided to indefinitely postpone implementation of the plan that would charge drivers a $15 tax to enter Manhattan below 60th Street.
We’re told that there are two reasons for the postponement, one being that Hochul is worried that congestion pricing will hurt Democrats in House races this fall, Politico and others reported.
She’s right about that. Few policies have been so universally reviled as congestion pricing. And everyone knows who to blame: New York state Democratic lawmakers.
But, again, don’t get too excited. Because if the political trouble passes in November and Democrats feel good about themselves again, they can just as easily put congestion........
