The Old Guy: On abandoning our isolation for intimacy

20 13
17.02.2024

The meme began: “We think we want sex. It’s intimacy we want.”

It went on to define intimacy as being touched, admired, looked at, smiled at. In short, somebody who just “gets” you as you get them.

The older I get, the more I’ve found this to be true.

As a society, we began to isolate with the advent of technology. We hid our faces behind our phones, computers and laptops. Then, in 2020, that sense of isolation increased with the pandemic, when we could only reach out to others electronically. Now, we were hiding our faces behind masks and shields.

Why do you think so much of the art we’re now seeing has to do with isolation? The physical and emotional isolation, darkness and coldness in “True Detective: Night Country.” The fish out of water syndrome in “Poor Things”. The terror, separation and ruggedness of life in “The Last Of Us.”

There is a theory that, in horror, a certain political party is represented by zombies. You know…”BRAINS! EAT THEM!” But, that’s just a theory.

The combined effect of the pandemic, climate change, inflation and political turmoil has led some to believe that the End Times are upon us. To that effect, they’ve decided to gather up their gold and valuables and prepare to leave this world and leave the rest of us behind.

Hogwash! The end........
