Selective Empathy: How Western Media Chooses Its Victims

Western news organisations often present themselves as neutral guardians of truth, claiming they challenge power and amplify unheard voices. Yet the way these outlets report on global conflicts repeatedly reveals a different reality, one shaped by political alignment, cultural conditioning, and strategic interests. Their coverage is rarely consistent, and the standards applied to Western allies often differ sharply from those applied to Western adversaries.

This imbalance became especially visible during Israel’s war on Gaza. Across major platforms, Palestinian guests were frequently treated as suspects rather than witnesses. Instead of being allowed to describe the destruction around them, many were confronted with moral tests, forced to prove their “acceptability” before being heard. A common pattern emerged, Palestinian voices were interrupted with demands to condemn Hamas, as if grief and testimony required prior certification.
