READER’S VIEW: Look out for new rules and old risks on our roads this winter

Whether you love it or hate it, winter is here!

We’ve already seen some snow, and we know more is on the way. With that, road safety becomes one of the biggest concerns this season. Driving in cold, snowy conditions is always more dangerous, but we don’t have to accept those risks as inevitable. Preparation and awareness go a long way toward preventing accidents.

Local officials do their part to keep roads clear, but drivers carry the greatest responsibility. Safe driving means slowing down, allowing extra travel time and keeping more distance between vehicles. It also means being prepared for the unexpected. Every car should have blankets, water, non-perishable snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables and a first‑aid kit.

Tires need to be checked for tread and inflation, and snow or ice should be cleared from every roof, window, mirror and light before hitting the road. Trust me, the driver behind you isn’t looking for a surprise snow delivery on their windshield.

While drivers’ personal responsibility........
