Colin Farquhar: After a year of alcohol overconsumption, could 2026 be the year I give up booze?

Well, it was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Thank God, eh? A bit of peace after a long year.

I trust that most of you have worked hard to keep yourselves off the naughty list and get your well-deserved rewards from Santa tomorrow morning.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for a new laptop for the New Year. Certain letters have worn away on this one from aggrieved typing – that’s what I get from reading the news too much.

Hopefully Santa has been able to deliver everything on time for you, even if the Royal Mail are struggling in north-east post codes, and everything you need is snugly under the tree, or en-route doon the chimney.

2025 has been a year of change for me, as I’m sure it has been for many of you reading.

I’ve turned 40, gotten married and felt incredibly lucky to have found someone sensible to love me for what I hope will be the rest of my days.

I’ve also decided to pack in my day job in pursuit of new adventures, which means a bit of uncertainty as we go into the New Year, but I’m really positive about what the universe might provide.
