Aberdeen no more? Labour’s oil and gas plans risk repeating Thatcher’s mistakes

Looks like The Proclaimers are going to have to rework the lyrics of Letter From America.

Bathgate no more, Linwood no more, Methil no more, Irvine no more… Aberdeen no more.

The Reid brothers’ iconic song was a plaintive protest at once thriving industrial centres laid waste by brutal and uncaring Government policy.

Back then it was Thatcherism run riot that emasculated heavy industry from car making to coal mining, leaving proud communities to count the court of clearances by Westminster policy.

Now our Labour lords and masters have decreed in the King’s Speech they will do the same thing to the oil and gas sector, despite its vital importance not just for the north-east, but for the Scottish economy.

And they are doing it in the face of........
