I don’t minimize what Odysseus went through. Scylla, the Cyclops, the suboptimal bedding and plumbing in the Trojan horse — it’s a lot. But if we’re being honest, there were mercies as well as Furies. He found uncrowded beaches. He didn’t need Orangetheory or Ozempic to stay slim.

And ancient Greece didn’t share modern America’s enervating penchant for taking anything that has........
