5G is useful for far more than movie streaming or fast downloads; it can be used for critical communications between warfighters on the front line of a battlefield.
The fifth-generation mobile network—more commonly known as “5G”—was developed to deliver significantly faster data speeds than the existing 4G network, while also offering lower latency and greater capacity. It employs higher radio frequencies, including millimeter wave (mmWave), which allows it to support not only mobile smartphones but also “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices, autonomous vehicles, and even military platforms.
To most people, 5G has made streaming to mobile devices easier. The Pentagon, on the other hand, is examining how to use it to benefit the modern warfighter.
This explains why aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin and Nokia Federal Solutions, the government-focused division of the Finnish telecom firm better known for its nearly indestructible cell phones, recently partnered to develop “a new modular, open‑architecture 5G solution built for the US and allied defense........
