USS Makin Island, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, might be the next US vessel deployed to the Persian Gulf as the Strait of Hormuz crisis deepens.
The United States Navy’s newest and largest supercarrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), finally returned to Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday, completing a record-length 326-day deployment. Two other nuclear-powered aircraft carriers—the Nimitz-class flattops USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77)—are now operating in the Middle East, as the US remains in a standoff with Iran.
It isn’t likely that another supercarrier will deploy to the region until at least this summer, as the East Coast-based USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) and West Coast-based USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) continue to conduct pre-deployment sea trials and flight operations. Instead, another warship may be making preparations to head to the Middle East if needed.
