The latest State Department visa restriction will impair the US economy and international image.

A new State Department directive to reduce the provision of US visas will cause enormous damage to America’s geopolitical and economic interests.

The new directive, sent from Secretary of State Marco Rubio to US diplomatic missions worldwide, instructs consular officers to ask applicants whether they “experienced harm or mistreatment” in their home country and whether they fear more of it upon their return. Officers must deny them visas unless they answer no to both questions. The administration clearly wants to sharply curtail the number of immigrants who seek asylum on humanitarian grounds once they’re here.

It’s part of a larger picture. Since he returned to office in January 2025, President Donald Trump hasreshaped US immigration policy by, among other things, banning travel into the United States from 39 countries, pausing green cards for applicants from 75 countries, deporting more than 600,000 illegal immigrants (while another 1.9 million left on their own), cancelling temporary protected status for more than a million migrants, revoking thousands of student visas, blocking asylum at the southern border, limiting refugees to just 7,500 in fiscal 2026, and imposing a $100,000 fee on H-IB visas.
