Why the US Air Force Wants $3.2 Billion for New Spare Parts

The funding is expected to increase the Air Force’s poor readiness rate, a long-running dilemma with its roots in the military contracting process.

The US Air Force is requesting $3.2 billion for spare parts as part of a broader readiness push. The request comes as the service deals with persistent aircraft downtime, as keeping existing jets airworthy becomes increasingly difficult. 

A 20 Percent Increase in Readiness Funding

The funding request would boost Operations & Maintenance (O&M) funding for Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) to $15.4 billion, an increase of 20 percent. The Working Capital Fund would also receive a $4 billion injection. The total readiness focus for FY2026 would include a $36.5 billion boost, if the request is taken up.

This is a massive spending increase centered simply on the sustainment of existing aircraft, not on the procurement of new ones.
