The US Navy recently announced that the future USS Ted Stevens (DDG-128) would be commissioned in Whittier, Alaska—an unusual venue that reflects both the ship’s namesake and the maritime importance of the 49th state. The new vessel has been named for Ted Stevens, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran who served for 40 years as the US Senator from Alaska. No date has yet been set for the commissioning, but it is widely expected to take place in the fall.
The commissioning is about more than honoring a single senator, even one with a career as distinguished as Stevens’. It marks the continued evolution of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, a cornerstone of the US fleet.
