Expansionist USA?
When I began thinking about a topic for my article today, I thought it would be important to give priority to the small issues, or rather the basic issues that affect us individually, in the family, at school and work, and in life overall.
Yet, the New Year had hardly begun before President Donald Trump and the USA changed the focus for all of us; Venezuela was attacked, and the left-wing, authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro, his wife Cilia Flores, and the President’s son Nicolás Ernesto Maduro Guerra, were taken prisoner and shipped off to New York to face criminal charges for weapons and drug trafficking and terrorism. As part of the well-planned operation, American soldiers attacked a number of civilian and military targets in Venezuela, not only targeting the first family.

In neighbouring Colombia, left-wing President Gustavo Petro is threatened by Trump, who has said that his days as his country’s leader are numbered. Trump has also said that Mexico should ‘get its act together’. His justification is said to be about reducing the amount of illegal drugs entering the USA from Latin America. In addition, the USA certainly also has economic interests in South America, indeed in Venezuela, which has the largest oil reserves in the world, though
currently with low production.
