Support New York's veterans by helping to house the homeless
Traditionally, the holidays are time when many of us count our blessings and look for opportunities to support those among us who are less fortunate. Statistics show that many of us embrace the “giving” aspect of this season, donating more of our time and money in November and December than the rest of the year.
This is certainly welcome for nonprofits dedicated to serving the most vulnerable members of our community. True giving should be year-round and include far more than just writing a check or dropping off a bag of food.
The need is staggering. According to Feeding America, Long Island, for example, has seen an almost 60% increase in the number of people who are food insecure, meaning they have limited or uncertain access to adequate nutritious food. Sadly, food is but one part of the equation. In fact, for many families food insecurity and related challenges are driven by rising costs that place housing out of reach or make it an unsustainable burden. Without a roof over their heads, nothing else is possible.
