A state senator once observed that she knew something big had struck a nerve with her constituents when her office received four phone calls.
Maybe they read something that riled them up in the newspaper that morning — an article or a column or an editorial — or saw something on the evening news the night before.
Whatever it was, it got them so angry and energized that they did more than just complain to their spouses about it. They looked up the name and number of their representative, got on their phone, called the number and spoke their piece.
