EDITORIAL: Prioritize law to protect children in custody disputes

Divorces involving children can be messy.

Couples who loathe each other sometimes do everything they can to punish one another.

And one of the most effective ways to do it is by using their children against one another.

It’s been known to happen that one spouse will imply, exaggerate or outright fabricate a case that the child might be unsafe in the other parent’s custody, thereby helping convince a judge to err on the side of caution and withhold access to that child or children from the accused parent.

Ironically, cases of one parent making such claims to alienate the other parent from their children appears to be one of the reasons why the state hasn’t been more aggressive in imposing more protections for children in custody cases.
