EDITORIAL: Make sure tax on tips bill is clear on reporting rules |
If you’re running for re-election and you introduce a proposal that has the support of 68% of voters, including 66% of those from the opposing political party, you have a winner on your hands.
And if this proposal fits into your broader political initiative to make life more affordable for your constituents, even better.
That’s no doubt why Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed capping the tax on tips collected by bar and restaurant staff, beauty salon workers, taxi and ride-share drivers, delivery people, hospitality employees and other workers who rely on tips as part of their income.
But while the intent is worthwhile and the benefits to those in low-wage industries are obvious, state lawmakers need to make sure they consider........
