EDITORIAL: Don’t let fear of change guide school decision

Closing school buildings, moving kids around and overall upsetting the traditional order can be very upsetting to those affected —particularly to parents, staff and students who have been accustomed to things being a certain way.

But sometimes circumstances like declining student enrollment, lower tax revenue, budget deficits and the prospect of higher taxes make those uncomfortable changes unavoidable.

The Scotia-Glenville school district finds itself in such a situation, both in terms of the need to make changes and in pushback from residents having difficulty accepting some of the tough decisions that district officials will need to make.
