Bankruptcy filings spiked across region in 2024 — Down to Business
Reflecting a national trend, bankruptcy filings for a wide swath of New York that includes the Capital Region rose last year to a level not seen locally since at least 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Overall filings by consumers and businesses reached nearly 3,700 in 2024, a 9.6% increase over 2023. Filings in 2020 totaled 4,400.
While higher than the past few years, the 2024 numbers are still a far cry from a decade ago, when more than 6,800 consumer and business filings were recorded.
The local data come from U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York, which encompasses a 32-county area stretching east and north from Binghamton toward the Canadian border.
