On 'gapjil,' a misuse of power and authority

When I first met with a man on our apartment council, I did not know he was adept at tricking people to get what he wanted. Neither did I know he was a fussy soul who enjoyed showing off his power, authority and privilege, while taking delight in bullying and harassing those who were weak. Presently he has an important position on our apartment council.

My bitter disappointment at the way he behaves prompted me to reflect on the nasty power tripping or "gapjil" that is widespread in our society.

Undoubtedly, to make this world a more pleasant place to live in, we need to refrain from power tripping or engaging in gapjil. The most infamous gapjil scandals we remember were the notorious, childish behavior exhibited by the late Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho's family.

Cho Hyun-ah gained global notoriety for the "nut rage" incident in 2014. She threw a tantrum, ordering a flight crew to return a taxiing........
