'Buying' US troops

By Eugene Lee

Recently a furor broke out in the media about Korea's payment for the stationing of U.S. troops in South Korea. And as I've been recently propagating ideas about improving South Korea's diplomacy I couldn't stay away from throwing my two cents into the debate.

First of all, the issue of stationing U.S. troops in South Korea has become a somewhat self-exhausting matter. While some are talking about "NATO being brain dead" in Europe and the U.S.' Middle-Eastern withdrawal, here in Asia the U.S. alliance is also being recalibrated.

All of that is happening with a more assertive military expansion of China and to some extent of Russia. The consequences of that are, whether we want it or not, the U.S. will have to increase its military activity here in Asia in order to counter them. Meaning the traffic needs to be increased to "out-crowd" them and someone has to pay for it.
