Nuclear power industry faces deepening woes

The country's nuclear phase-out policy is shaking the foundations of the atomic energy industry to its core. The policy has raised the costs of electricity generation by shutting down aged reactors and canceling the building of new nuclear power plants. It has also made state-run utilities companies suffer from snowballing losses.

Many parts suppliers have been driven out of business, while a growing number of nuclear scientists and engineers have no other choice but to quit their jobs and leave for other countries to seek new opportunities. This has inevitably raised the issue of a brain drain. Even universities are closing down nuclear engineering departments because fewer students are applying to them in the aftermath of the nuclear phase-out.
