Korea's great diplomats

By Choe Chong-dae

"Civilization on Trial," written by Arnold Toynbee, stated that "Civilizations, I believe, come to birth and proceed to grow by successfully responding to successive challenges. They break down and go to pieces if and when a challenge confronts them which they fail to meet."

Currently, Korea is faced with unprecedented challenges in a wide range of fields such as diplomacy, security, the economy and politics. Remarkably, Korea and Japan are embroiled in a bitter trade war that is rooted in a decades-long historical conflict caused by Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea.

The trade war led Korea to terminate a military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan and this abrupt ending has made the U.S. uncomfortable. Furthermore, the U.S. has pressured South Korea to increase its payment for the presence of U.S. troops here. Russian and Chinese military aircraft have also recently invaded Korean airspace while they were conducting joint air drills.

To make matters........
