A bird's lonely death

Last month, I had an opportunity to stay for several days at a friend's condo in Ocean City, Maryland. One morning, I looked out the window and found something that caught my eye. It was a dead bird. It appeared to be a seagull, although its beak looked like that of an eagle.

I watched ocean waves crashing in the area surrounding the dead bird for about an hour. It was a strange sight. Crashing waves moved all around the bird, but never touched it, as if they wanted to protect the remains from getting wet. I finally took a picture.

The picture led me to think about an interesting theatre production that I saw in November last year, at the suggestion of my friend, Anne Martin. The play "Everybody" was being performed at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C.

The unique part of the play is that "everybody" eventually dies but tries to bring "someone" from his or her past into the final journey toward death. That........
