President Biden's withdrawal a gracious step

President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race is increasingly seen as a positive reflection on him, even though this sentiment is rarely expressed today.

His address Wednesday to the nation was in this spirit, dignified and formal. Critics carping that he should have provided details reveal more about themselves than him.

True to form, former President Donald Trump reacted with a series of crude personal insults. Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, now Republican vice-presidential nominee, has chimed in that the president should resign immediately.

The first statement is low-grade invective typical of the source, and the second is bizarre. Joe Biden, like our other presidents, took a formal oath to serve and has a professional, if not legal, obligation to continue the work of the office until the completion of his term.

Presidential resignation does have precedent. President Richard M. Nixon resigned on Aug. 8, 1974,........
