Take the China technology challenge seriously

Uh oh. Survey data from Politico, the media giant, shows that “the 21st century is more likely to belong to Beijing than to Washington,” at least if thinking among four key U.S. allies, Canada, France, Germany and the U.K. is indicative.

Worse, respondents believe “it is better to depend on China than the U.S.,” blaming U.S. President Donald Trump’s “turbulent return to office” and the resulting difficulty in trusting Washington rather than any new reliability in Beijing.

Such conclusions aren’t surprising. The findings confirm those of a critical new study of China’s technology ambitions, one that echoes my own work on the importance of tech leadership and global power. The companies and countries that prevail in the development and dissemination of new technologies will lead the world. There is a real competition and U.S. and Western victory is not guaranteed.
