ANYONE driving any distance this week will have noticed an increased PSNI presence, as a welcome focus is put on the shocking number of deaths on our roads.
Operation Lifesaver aims to highlight what a senior officer described as the “carnage” which has seen 42 people lose their lives so far this year – equivalent to one death every five days.
This compares to 27 fatalities at the same time last year, and 56 during the whole of 2025.
Across the border, there have been more than 100 deaths since January – also an increase on last year – with Oscar-winning musician and actor Glen Hansard becoming the latest victim following a motorcycle crash in Dublin early yesterday.
