Christmas memories are priceless – let’s keep it real this year

Our next-door neighbour, Pamela, was great fun and took me everywhere with her.

She says I was a well-behaved child, except for the time we went to see the Co-Op Santa. It wasn’t my proudest moment.

There was a little boy in front of me in the queue, and we had a great time looking at the decorations as we slowly moved past magical polar bear scenes. The adults did their best to keep our excitement from turning into chaos.

The Co-op Santa was so popular that it felt like forever before we finally reached the front of the queue.

Back then, Santa or his helpers would choose a present based on whether you were a boy or a girl. I watched, wide-eyed, as the boy in front of me got a blue, bulky present.

My gift, from the girls’ box, was bigger, but I wanted his instead. The wrapping paper on his looked better to my five-year-old eyes.

After meeting Santa, who had a very fake-looking cotton wool beard and told me I was on his nice list, I........
