TWO things struck me about the GB elections last Thursday.
The leaders of nationalism in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland got terribly excited and decided that, at long last – their battles go back hundreds of years – their moment had come.
They were in a group chat on Saturday afternoon and, according to Mary Lou McDonald, “the demand for independence is growing and we look forward to working together in common cause”.
The other thing was that they all seemed to be pinning an awful lot of hope on Nigel Farage and Reform UK winning the next general election, swinging far to the right on a raft of polices, including “the hard Brexit the UK voted for in 2016”, and thereby encouraging an unstoppable demand for independence.

One thing is certain, though, there will not be a Scottish referendum this side of the general election due in 2029.
No Labour prime minister is going to open that particular door, especially if the government pushes on with the rebuilding relationships with the EU project.
