Moore: Joel Embiid does more, but still has work to do

The Sixers’ center was better than in the previous meeting with the Raptors, but must cut down on his turnovers

PHILADELPHIA — In the wake of his first scoreless NBA game, Joel Embiid has changed his mindset since a Nov. 25 loss to the Raptors in Toronto.

Embiid has been more aggressive and tried to initiate more contact after missing all 11 of his field goal attempts and all three of his free throws in 32 minutes against Marc Gasol and the double-teaming Raptors during a 101-96 drubbing. His next-lowest output this season had been 14 points.

The numbers support Embiid. In the five games prior to Sunday, Embiid had averaged 26.8 points, 15.2 rebounds and 12.8 free throw attempts, hitting 87.5 percent of his foul shots. Those are all increases on his season averages.

On Sunday night at the Wells Fargo Center, Embiid had his first chance to face Gasol and Toronto since Embiid assessed his Nov. 25 performance this way: “I would have never thought that I would be here, talking about zero points in an NBA game.”
