Moore: Banner career for Jason Thompson at Lenape

The former NBA player was honored with a banner during a ceremony at his alma mater, Lenape, on Thursday night

Jason Thompson didn’t think he’d able to make it Thursday night at his alma mater.

Thompson was supposed to be playing professionally in China, but the China Basketball League suspended its season Feb. 1 due to the coronavirus. That’s the reason Thompson, who is “just glad to be healthy and safe,” could attend a ceremony during halftime of a game against Eastern in which a banner with his photo and accomplishments was placed next to the banner commemorating Lenape’s 2004 Group IV state championship for which Thompson starred.

“Man, it’s surreal, honestly,” Thompson said. “I think it helped me to become the player I am. It’s crazy it happened so many years ago. I don’t know if you know how amazing that run was. I never take for granted the players I played with and the coaches.”

Asked for his favorite memories of his magical senior season, Thompson had plenty.

“I remember it all like it was yesterday,” he said. “There are so many highlights.”
