Fitzgerald: Love of Christmas turns to giving over receiving

I’ve always loved Christmas season. The reasons I’ve loved it have changed over the years, but the simple emotion remains the same.

As a little kid, who doesn’t love the presents? Heck, it was all about the presents. And I better not have fewer gifts than my brothers or sister.

As tween, teen and college student, it was often about the clothes or cash. It always seemed like a good time for new clothes and the cash was greatly appreciated.

As a starving journalist early in my career, I started appreciating the time with my family more since I didn’t see them nearly as much as I did when I was a kid.

Then my own kids came.

I still remember putting together a table hockey game from Santa and seeing the sun rise. Which means Santa finished about 12 minutes before the kids got up and dog-piled him in bed. We had a rule that they couldn’t open presents without us, and they followed the rule. Santa did manage a nap later that day.
