Guest Opinion: What happened in Afghanistan has changed this nation

“I needed to be broken,” my friend said. She and her husband had me over for dinner. They are Baptist and I’m a Catholic. Our conversations usually lead to discussing Christianity one way or another. “I needed to be broken,” she explained.

“Those years during college, they were difficult and they wore me down. But I had been so prideful during high school. I constantly looked for fulfillment through people, through my achievements, through everyone but the One that could fulfill me. So yes, they broke me, tore me to pieces. But I needed to be broken.”

While her words resonated with me in more ways than I can say, I could not help but compare them to the current state of our country. What happened in Afghanistan has changed this nation. We have been broken on the world stage, in front of our allies and our enemies.
