Vaping linked to faster onset of cannabis disorder: Study

(NewsNation) — Using cannabis vape cartridges could lead to faster-developing symptoms of an increasingly common marijuana-related disorder, according to a recent study.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) causes recurring bouts of severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting in some long-time chronic cannabis users.

What did the study reveal about vaping and CHS?

In research published on March 5 in Sage Journals, more than 1,000 participants suspected of having or diagnosed with CHS were surveyed.

Those who exclusively vape reported developing symptoms of CHS sooner — and smoked more frequently — than those who exclusively smoked marijuana.

About 96 percent of respondents reported using cannabis daily, and 45 percent reported using six or more times a day, around the time they started to develop CHS symptoms, supporting the notion that long-term, frequent use of cannabis is a key contributor to CHS.

The study also found that women experienced more and longer-lasting CHS symptoms than men.

CHS becoming increasingly common

CHS is becoming an increasing concern for doctors, with an estimated 2.75 million people affected per year in the U.S., and hospital visits for the condition doubling between 2017 and 2021, according to JAMA.

In Virginia, emergency department visits linked to the syndome have increased nearly 29 percent over a five-year period, according to data from the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
