Nick Lachey reveals 98 Degrees kept an ‘age of consent’ guide on tour bus
(NewsNation) — Nick Lachey said he and his 98 Degrees bandmates were advised to be aware of girls’ ages while on tour in the ’90s.
Reflecting on his time in the group, Lachey discussed the experience in a new ID documentary titled “Boy Band Confidential.”
“This is going to sound super shady, but when we first went out,” Lachey said. “I remember our first tour, someone at the label gave us a book, and it was the age of consent in every state.”
He said the book was kept on the band’s tour bus.

Lachey’s bandmates included his brother Drew, Jeff Timmons, and Justin Jeffre. At the time, all four members were in their early 20s.
Lachey said the label aimed to protect him and the other group members, who were between 21 and 24 years old, from potential legal issues.
98 Degrees’ financial troubles
In the documentary, Lachey also spoke about the financial constraints the band faced after receiving a modest advance from their label, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“98 Degrees, we signed with Motown, and we got a very nominal advance on our contract,” Lachey said. “We knew that all expenses were recoupable and so we took the opposite approach [from other bands],” adding that when they took a break from recording, they would get fast food.
“At the end of the session at 4 a.m., we’re not going to get a car service back to Brooklyn,” he said. “We’ll take the A train back to Brooklyn, in the middle of winter. The four of us, at 4 in the morning, standing in the subway station.”
