California Republicans snub Trump, don’t endorse in governor’s race
The California Republican Party did not endorse a candidate for governor on Sunday at their convention despite President Trump’s endorsement of former Fox News host Steve Hilton in the race.
In a post on the social platform X on Sunday, the Golden State GOP said, “neither candidate for Governor was able to reach the 60% threshold to earn the endorsement of the California Republican Party.”
The post featured a photo of a graph showing that Hilton had garnered support from 442 delegates, while Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco garnered 496. Seventy-five delegates backed a non-endorsement.
Earlier this month, Trump backed Hilton in the race for California governor and bashed term-limited California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), with whom he has had a longstanding feud, in a social media post.
“I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for Governor of California, for many years. He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great State has gone to Hell,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“Gavin Newscum and the Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job. People are fleeing, crime is increasing, and Taxes are the highest of any State in the Country, maybe the World,” he added.
The non-endorsement on the Republican side of the Golden State gubernatorial race also came amid turmoil on the Democratic side, with Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), dropping out of the race as he faces sexual assault allegations.
Swalwell on Sunday announced that he was suspending his campaign, about two days after initial reports alleging that he had sexually assaulted a staffer on multiple occasions.
“I am suspending my campaign for Governor,” Swalwell said on X on Sunday. “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”
