Democrats’ string of left-wing primary wins is giving the party’s progressive flank a burst of momentum — and potentially handing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) a new headache should Democrats take back the House.
The recent victories come as Democratic voters have been clamoring for a change in direction. That appetite was on full display last week in Michigan, where Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)-backed progressive candidate Donavan McKinney defeated Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) in the Democratic primary. Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed also scored a major win against Rep. Haley Stevens (Mich.), a battle-tested moderate Democrat, in the Michigan Senate primary — a result that sent a fresh jolt through the party.
And last month, 29-year-old democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) in the Colorado Democratic primary, while Reps. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) and Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) were also ousted in their primaries.
Jeffries, however, could find himself refereeing a familiar but increasingly consequential fight next year: Progressives would arrive looking to turn their victories into a mandate for a more ambitious agenda, while moderates from competitive districts will be focused on protecting their seats and avoiding votes that could give Republicans ammunition.
If Democrats take the House — as forecasters predict — but the margins remain narrow, Jeffries could face a difficult balancing act in leading a caucus where a handful of defections could derail the party’s agenda.
