Cuba president vows ‘impregnable resistance’ after Trump talk of taking island

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel vowed “impregnable resistance” in response to renewed threats this week from President Trump to take over the island.

“The US publicly threatens #Cuba, almost daily, with overthrowing the constitutional order by force,” Díaz-Canel wrote on the social platform X Tuesday.

“And it uses an outrageous pretext: the harsh limitations of the weakened economy that they have attacked and sought to isolate for more than six decades,” he continued.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday that he will have the “honor” of taking over Cuba.

“Whether I free it, take it, I think I can do anything I want with it,” Trump said. “You want to know the truth, they’re a very weakened nation now.”

A blackout in the country is affecting 11 million people after the Trump administration cut off the island’s main oil supply from Venezuela at the end of January as part of the president’s ongoing effort to broker a new deal with the Cuban government.

The details of this proposed agreement have not been released. Díaz-Canel confirmed at the end of last week that his government is talking with the White House to address “bilateral differences” and locate “areas of cooperation” between the two nations.

Díaz-Canel said these discussions are “a very sensitive process that is conducted with seriousness and responsibility.”

Trump said on Sunday that the Cuban government wanted to “make a deal” with the U.S. and that the agreement would be made “pretty soon.”

However, Trump added that his administration would “do Iran before Cuba,” referring to ongoing strikes on the Middle Eastern country.

Díaz-Canel pushed back on Trump’s statements Tuesday.

“In the face of the worst scenario, #Cuba is accompanied by a certainty: any external aggressor will clash with an impregnable resistance,” the Cuban leader said.
