US reviewing Mexican consulates ahead of possible closures
The U.S. is conducting a review of Mexico’s consulates ahead of potential closures, a State Department official told The Associated Press on Thursday.
It is unclear why the State Department is reviewing the consulates, though the closures could further drive a wedge between Mexico and the U.S.
When asked by The Hill about the review, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson said the State Department is “constantly reviewing all aspects of American foreign relations to ensure they are in line with the President’s America First foreign policy agenda and advance American interests.”
President Trump’s Mexican counterpart, President Claudia Sheinbaum, has worked on improving the relationship between the neighboring countries and has taken a more aggressive approach on Mexico’s notorious drug cartels amid pressure from the Trump administration.
But recent actions in Mexico have caused tensions to escalate with its northern neighbor.
