Becerra holds 6-point lead as Californians prepare to vote for governor
A new poll shows former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra (D) holding a 6-point lead as the frontrunner in the final days leading up to the June 2 California gubernatorial primary race.
The Emerson College Polling/Inside California Politics survey released Saturday found Becerra receiving support from 28 percent of voters, followed by billionaire Tom Steyer (D) at 22 percent. Former Fox News commentator Steve Hilton (R) is slightly behind at 21 percent.
Becerra has seen a steady uptick in support in recent months. He had just 5 percent support in September 2025, dropping to 3 percent in March. This support, however, jumped 7 points in April, when Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-Calif.) dropped his bid after several women came forward with allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.
“Xavier Becerra maintains frontrunner status in the final Emerson poll ahead of Tuesday’s primary, while Tom Steyer and Steve Hilton both have paths to advance to the November general election,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement.
