Madonna announces ‘Confessions II’ release date, reveals covers of 15th album
(NEXSTAR) – After seven long years for fans, pop queen Madonna finally gave the world its first real peek at her long-teased 15th studio album on Tuesday morning.
The music superstar revealed the artwork for and release date for “Confessions II,” a sequel album to her beloved 2005 dance-pop masterpiece “Confessions on a Dancefloor.”
The album, first teased by Madonna in February 2025, will reunite the 67-year-old hitmaker with English electronic super-producer Stuart Price, who co-produced some of the most iconic tracks from “COADF,” including the ABBA-sampling “Hung Up” and the trance-infused “Get Together.”
In an Instagram post, Madonna announced the album, also referred to as “Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II,” would be released July 3. So far, the artist has confirmed three tracks on the record, including “I Feel So Free,” previewed as part of the announcement, in addition to “Forgive Yourself” and “Fragile.” In a September 2025 interview on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, she described the latter two songs as exploring her strained relationship with her brother Christopher Ciccone, who died in October 2024.
While the prospect of a new dance album from Madonna has most fans excited, others have expressed worry about the artist revisiting one of her most fan-favorite eras.
On Reddit’s “popheads” subreddit Tuesday morning, fans and general listeners weighed in on confirmation of the title as a sequel.
“Oh my god, a sequel to ‘Confessions On A Dance Floor.’ What a way to set expectations sky high, I hope she can pull it off,” wrote one Reddit user. Another argued, as have some others, that a sequel album feels corny or desperate.
“Amazing, but did she HAVE to call it ‘Confessions 2’? Its so …. reductive. Madonna has always been about pushing forwards and setting trends, or redefining the music scene. This just feels like she is trying to achieve new success by capitalizing on past glories,” wrote another user.
Concerns aside, buzz is high for this release.
The break between the release of “Confessions II” and her previous album, 2019’s polarizing “Madame X,” marks the longest period the artist has ever gone without releasing new music. While Madonna took a four-year break between 2008’s “Hard Candy” and 2012’s “MDNA,” the “love-it-or-hate-it” nature of “Madame X” made the seven year wait even harder for some fans who didn’t click with the album’s Latin and trap-infused collage of sounds.
During her musical break, Madonna appeared in multiple duets and features with other artists, including a 2020 remix of Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” in addition to “Vulgar” with Sam Smith and 2023’s “Popular” alongside The Weeknd and Playboi Carti.
In the official press announcement, Madonna explained that the new album reflects her desire to bring people together with the power of dance.
“We must dance, celebrate, and pray with our bodies. These are things that we’ve been doing for thousands of years — they really are spiritual practices. After all, the dance floor is a ritualistic space. It’s a place where you connect — with your wounds, with your fragility. To rave is an art. It’s about pushing your limits and connecting to a community of like-minded people,” Madonna wrote.
“Sound, light, and vibration reshape our perceptions, pulling us into a trancelike state,” she added. “The repetition of the bass, we don’t just hear it but we feel it. Altering our consciousness and dissolving ego and time.”
