Jeanine Pirro cracks down on violent Navy Yard teens; punish the parents, too?
Video footage of a disturbing incident has gone viral on social media. It shows a group of teenagers trashing a Chipotle restaurant, hurling chairs at each other, and causing chaos as frightened customers hide in the corner. It’s all the more disturbing for me because it took place in my own neighborhood.
If this was a one-off incident, perhaps members of the community wouldn’t be so worried. But I can tell you that it is not a one-off incident. In fact, it’s happening with greater frequency.
I’ve lived in this area of D.C. for five years, and over that time this specific problem has gotten steadily worse, even though the district’s overall crime rate has supposedly fallen. I’m glad that we seem to have fewer murders and carjackings than we did two years ago. But we have way more gangs of teenager marauders attacking restaurants, convenience stores, or simply brawling in the streets.
They call them teen takeovers. These young people come to the neighborhood from elsewhere, usually taking the metro or scooters, and descend upon a neighborhood that is not their own with a vengeance.
